This little story has been on my mind lately. I never look back to see what stories I have shared, so may have shared before...
Okay, now I stole this picture off of my friend's website thepretentiouspig.com (thanks!) because I didn't take the time to take one of Madilyn's. My mom purchased one of these piggy banks for Madilyn a few years ago. She loves it! AND the boys were always a bit jealous. They were also made to be jealous because if I found any extra change while cleaning the house it ended up in her piggy bank. And, if anyone knows my husband, they know we have a lot of extra change hanging around the house. The boys could tell she was making a killing.
Well, Ethan was smarter than the average little boy. He would get an excited attitude and ask Madilyn if she wanted to count her money. Of course she did! So, they would proceed to count. At first, he had me convinced too. Then, when all the money was counted he would come in to me and say something like this, "Madilyn has $50, she wants to buy the new Cars 2 Video game!" Knowing this was far from the truth I would in turn ask Madilyn, "Do you really want a video game with your money?" Her eyes would dart from Ethan back to me and back to Ethan, then she'd answer "yeah" with not much conviction. I had to inform Ethan that HE was not allowed to spend Madilyn's money. She didn't really want the video game and he would have to save his own money. He had his own, but wanted to spend hers.
A few days later Ethan came in with a bunch of change and said he wanted to go buy this video game (honestly, I don't remember which video game it was). I asked if it was his money. He said yes. I asked him to show me where he got it. He usually didn't have change--just paper cash, if any. He liked to spend his money on treats (feeding his sugar addiction). He looked very guilty. I finally got out of him that he had taken it from Madilyn's piggy bank.
I had Ethan return all money to Madilyn's piggy bank and then I taped the bottom of the piggy bank. I took one piece of tape and taped across the opening. I let Madilyn and Ethan both know they were not allowed to get money out. I was the only person allowed to remove the tape. This way, Ethan wouldn't steal her money and she couldn't be conned out of it. I'd like to say this worked ALL time, but really only for MOST of the time. There were a few times I caught Ethan trying to remove the tape carefully so he could put it back. Why he was never satisfied with his own money I will never know.
Either, Madilyn is easily conned, or Ethan was just a good salesman?? I am going with the salesman.
